Dry January

After the boozy excess of December, which often follows the boozy excess of summer, I’m always ready for a break from alcohol in January.

I’ve found that I can often lose around a kilo a week when I stop drinking. Some of this will be due to the liquid calories consumed in addition to meals but I also find that healthier decisions are made without a glass of wine in your hand.

With the average bottle of wine containing around 650 calories, a night out could rack up 1,300 calories in booze alone. A heavy drinking month would account for 16,000 calories before you add in takeaways and carb heavy breakfasts that result from drunken decision making.

A few years ago I cut 15kgs in six weeks to take part in a charity MMA fight. A combination of high protein diet and around 10 hours exercise a week made it relatively easy. Even in the depths of a very focused diet, I allowed myself a glass of wine a couple of times a week.

Drinking less booze will help reduce calorie intake in of itself and you can add a ‘good decisions’ multiplier to any ‘dry’ period.

I also find that you sleep better when not drinking and this also helps with making healthier eating options and training consistency.

There is plenty of science on this issue that will argue the pros and cons of drinking. Like my old home economics teacher used to say – ‘everything in moderation’.

If you’re tackling dry-January, good luck and why not try investing in some good quality, low-calorie soft drinks to make the evenings a little less boring.
